What Is Mr. Rebates?
If you know what a rebate is then you probably have at least an idea about what Mr. Rebates is.
It’s a company founded back in 2002 that allows you to earn cash back on various products that you purchase online.
They allow you to get money back on purchases that you make through them at 2500 different online stores.
Let’s briefly go over how it works, and then jump into some of the pros and cons.
How Mr. Rebates Works
If you’ve ever used any other cashback programs in the past then you probably already understand the gist of how it works.
They are partnered with over 2500 stores, and if you purchase items from those stores through Mr.Rebates links, you’ll get a certain percentage of your purchase back.
These stores range from large retailers that you probably shop at all the time like Walmart and Amazon, all the way to smaller stores you’ve probably never heard of.
These companies pay Mr.Rebates to get people like you and me to buy stuff from their websites, and then Mr.Rebates gives some of that money back to us.
It’s a win-win situation.
The Pros & Cons
Let’s take a little bit of time to go over some of the good and not so good things I could find out Mr.Rebates.
Pros:
- Easy To Sign Up & Use
- Google Chrome Extension
- Mobile App
- Decent Cashback Percentages
- 2500 Online Stores
- Free To Sign Up & Use
Cons:
- No In-Store Cashback
- Some Cashback Companies Have Higher Percentages
- Various Problems & Complaints
Over the next few sections I’ll be going further in detail about some of the points I listed out above.
The Mr.Rebates Google Chrome Extension
Whenever I’m on a random online website about to buy something, I often forget to check and see if I could get cashback by using a cashback service.
However with the Mr.Rebates Google Chrome extension you don’t have to worry about that happening.
Normally you’d have to go to your account on the cashback website, and search for the website your making a purchase from.
However the extension will automatically alert you if any website you’re on will give you cash back, and all you have to do is click on the alert to activate the cash back.
That’s one of my favorite things that they offer.
No In-Store Purchases
This is one of the biggest downsides to Mr.Rebates in my personal opinion.
Even though I do a lot of online shopping, I also do a lot of in-store shopping as well, and I really wish I could get cash back when doing it.
Unfortunately Mr.Rebates only allows you to get money back on purchases made online.
However the good thing is that with some of the places you can purchase your products online through them, and set it up for in-store pick up.
However there is often a longer wait period for the pick, depending on which company you’re purchasing from.
Complaints
let’s briefly go over some of the complaints I’ve seen in various places from members and past members.
Problems Getting Cashback
I’ve seen a few complaints from people claiming that they sometimes don’t get credit for the purchases that they make.
Honestly there are quite a few things that could cause this, so you need to pay attention when you’re making your purchases.
One thing you should do is make sure that Mr.Rebates is the only tab open when shopping because it’s possible for the tracking system to get confused.
Also don’t use any external coupons because that will void your cash back. Only use discounts offered through Mr.Rebates.
Another thing that could mess up your cash back is purchasing in bulk, there is a chance it could void your cash back as well.
Not As Good As Other Companies
Another thing I seem to see is that people complain that “Mr.Rebates only offers x% off when another company offer xx%”
There are a lot of cashback websites and apps out there, and many of them will have better deals from different stores.
It just depends.
If you are big into getting cashback, it might be worth it to “shop” around at different cash back companies and see which ones give better deals.
Just make sure you are aware of the minimum cash out thresholds ($10 at Mr.Rebates), that way you don’t just have $3 or so in different accounts that you can never actually cash out.
Is Mr.Rebates A Scam Or Worth It?
Mr.Rebates is definitely not a scam, and will absolutely be worth it to many people out there who like getting cash back.
It’s up to you to compare them to any other cash back websites you use, and see how they stack up.
Personally I won’t be using them due to the fact that there are other similar programs out there like Dosh, who allow you to shop both online and in-store.
They even give you cashback automatically when you make eligible purchases using any card you link to your account.
I like it so much because I constantly make cash back without having to do anything other than my normal shopping.
